Written by Hope White Heath and translated by Iwan Thomas. All credits go to the artist for the work displayed.
On March 6th Gwesty Cymru had an exhibition for the artist Toby Wills-Hart. His work is abstract and multiplex. They are the kind of pieces that evolve as you look at them, there are always new things to be spotted within.
I interviewed Toby about his art, process, inspirations and the importance of meditation.
H: how long have you been an artist for?
T: I guess, I’ve always been creating things, I’ve never not been an artist.
H: What is your process?
T: My process involves getting to these states of meditation where I’m letting the paint move through me. I’m not the one painting as such, I’m more of a vessel for paint. Parts of my subconscious get rendered in paint. When my experiences come back to me, I want to paint. The viewer can determine their own meaning to it, their own interpretation. Drawing these forms and creating this space mean whatever you want.
H: What is your inspiration for your paintings?
T: I just have to wait until I get hit by that feeling of oh, I’ve got to paint now, it’s just a feeling really.
H: What mediums do you normally work in?
T: Mostly oil paints and more recently soft pastels. Drawing as well, like with pencils.
H: How do you buy your art?
T: Contact me through my website, email, Instagram, find me in person. Let me know, I can do payment plans and you can hold it, whatever works. Buy it before I get famous!
Toby’s work does stop you in your tracks. The abstract nature of the art means you can look at a piece twice in one day and get completely different things from it. The exhibition is on for another month, I would recommend you check it out!

Ar Fawrth 6ed cafwyd arddangosfa gan Gwesty Cymru ar gyfer yr artist Toby Wills-Hart. Mae ei waith yn haniaethol ac yn amlblecs. Dyma'r math o ddarnau sy'n esblygu wrth i chi edrych arnyn nhw, mae yna bethau newydd bob amser i'w gweld ynddynt. Fe wnes i gyfweld â Toby am ei gelf, ei broses, ei ysbrydoliaeth a phwysigrwydd myfyrdod.
H: Ers faint wyt ti wedi bod yn artist?
T: Wel, dwi wastad wedi bod yn creu pethau, dwi erioed wedi bod yn artist.
H: Beth yw eich proses?
T: Mae fy mhroses yn golygu cyrraedd y cyfnodau hyn o fyfyrdod lle rwy'n gadael i'r paent symud trwodd i mi. Nid fi yw'r un peintio fel y cyfryw, rwy'n fwy o lestr i baent. Mae rhannau o fy isymwybod wedi'u rendro mewn paent. Pan ddaw fy mhrofiadau yn ôl ataf, rydw i eisiau peintio. Gall y gwyliwr aseinio eu hystyr eu hunain iddo, eu dehongliad eu hunain. Mae lluniadu'r ffurflenni hyn a chreu'r gofod hwn yn golygu beth bynnag y dymunwch.
H: Beth yw eich ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer eich paentiadau?
T: Mae'n rhaid i mi aros nes i mi gael fy nharo gyda'r teimlad yna o, mae'n rhaid i mi beintio nawr, dim ond teimlad ydyw a dweud y gwir.
H: Pa ddeunyddiau ydych chi'n gweithio ynddynt fel arfer?
T: Paent olew yn bennaf ac yn fwy diweddar pasteli meddal. Arlunio hefyd, fel gyda phensiliau.
H: Sut ydych chi'n prynu eich celf?
T: Cysylltwch â mi trwy fy ngwefan, e-bost, Instagram, dewch o hyd i mi yn bersonol. Rhowch wybod i mi, gallaf wneud cynlluniau talu a gallwch ei ddal, beth bynnag sy'n gweithio. Prynwch hi cyn i mi ddod yn enwog!
Mae gwaith Toby yn eich rhwystro yn eich traciau. Mae natur haniaethol y gelfyddyd yn golygu y gallwch chi edrych ar ddarn ddwywaith mewn un diwrnod a chael pethau cwbl wahanol ohono. Mae'r arddangosfa ymlaen am fis arall, byddwn yn argymell eich bod yn edrych arno!
