This May, Aberystwyth Arts Centre is set to host The TAKEOVER 2023, a creative arts exhibition displaying the works of students from Aberystwyth University’s School of Art. We spoke to Saad Hussain, an artist who is participating in The TAKEOVER 2023 and helping to organize the event.
According to Hussain, The TAKEOVER is “an annual pop-up exhibition”, hosted by the Arts Centre every spring featuring the work of students studying interdisciplinary practice with the University’s School of Art. Visitors can expect works in the exhibition to include “everything from performance and sound to installation, sculpture and animation”. Visitor tours of the exhibition will be led by Miranda Whall, a class tutor from the School of Art. Other activities taking place will include poetry readings, while multiple artist-led workshops are “being considered” to run concurrently with the exhibition. Children’s activities will also be available at the event.
The works on display at the exhibition are
united by a common theme, and the theme of each year’s TAKEOVER is unique.
Hussain describes the themes around which projects are based as “connecting the
whole exhibition together”, with each year’s theme being “the main difference”
between editions of the exhibition. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “time”,
while last year’s event featured projects connected by the theme of “home”.
On organisers’ intentions in running the exhibition, Hussain states that “the main aim” is “to get more art related events in Aber and get the community together”. He also says that the exhibition aims to be “short, but interesting”.

Ym mis Mai, mae Canolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth ar fin cynnal The TAKEOVER 2023, arddangosfa celfyddydau creadigol yn arddangos gweithiau myfyrwyr o Ysgol Gelf Prifysgol Aberystwyth. Buom yn siarad â Saad Hussain, artist sy’n cymryd rhan yn The TAKEOVER 2023 ac yn helpu i drefnu’r digwyddiad.
Yn ôl Hussain, mae The TAKEOVER yn "arddangosfa naid flynyddol", a gynhelir gan Ganolfan y Celfyddydau bob gwanwyn yn cynnwys gwaith myfyrwyr sy'n astudio ymarfer rhyngddisgyblaethol gydag Ysgol Gelf y Brifysgol. Gall ymwelwyr ddisgwyl i weithiau yn yr arddangosfa gynnwys "popeth o berfformiad a sain i osodiadau, cerflunwaith ac animeiddiad". Bydd teithiau ymwelwyr o amgylch yr arddangosfa yn cael eu harwain gan Miranda Whall, tiwtor dosbarth o’r Ysgol Gelf. Bydd gweithgareddau eraill a gynhelir yn cynnwys darlleniadau barddoniaeth, tra bod gweithdai lluosog dan arweiniad artistiaid yn cael eu “hystyried” i redeg ochr yn ochr â’r arddangosfa. Bydd gweithgareddau plant hefyd ar gael yn y digwyddiad.
Mae'r gweithiau sy'n cael eu harddangos yn yr arddangosfa wedi'u huno gan thema gyffredin, ac mae thema DYLANWAD bob blwyddyn yn unigryw. Mae Hussain yn disgrifio'r themâu y mae prosiectau wedi'u seilio o'u cwmpas fel "clymu'r arddangosfa gyfan at ei gilydd", a thema bob blwyddyn yw'r "prif wahaniaeth" rhwng rhifynnau'r arddangosfa. Thema arddangosfa eleni yw "amser", tra bod digwyddiad y llynedd yn cynnwys prosiectau sy'n gysylltiedig â'r thema "cartref"
Ynglŷn â bwriadau'r trefnwyr wrth gynnal yr arddangosfa, dywed Hussain mai'r "prif nod" yw "cael mwy o ddigwyddiadau yn ymwneud â chelf yn Aber a chael y gymuned ynghyd". Mae hefyd yn dweud mai nod yr arddangosfa yw bod yn "fyr, ond yn ddiddorol".
