The Arts Centre is buzzing. Heading out of the\ntheatre, I find myself caught in a lively throng of families, couples, and\nfriends, all excitedly discussing the events of the past few hours. Nobody, it\nseems, has been able to escape the thrill of the Kendal Mountain Film Festival.\nPart of an ongoing UK tour, the festival showcased seven short films from\naround the globe, each one unique in both tone and topic. From Sheffield to\nAfghanistan, dirt biking to mountain climbing, the event truly had something for\neveryone.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Kicking off the tour with a burst of adrenaline\nand a punchy soundtrack, \u2018Write Your Line\u2019 (dir. Marc Augey, Andy Collet)\ntraced freestyle skier Ben Buratti\u2019s journey from young boy in the south of\nFrance to international Winter Sports athlete and featured a great deal of\nflips and tricks. Coming in at just three minutes long, it was the perfect\ntone-setter for the rest of the show, eliciting gasps from all around the\ntheatre every time the camera pulled in on a particularly high-risk stunt. This\nwas immediately followed by \u2018Digging for Answers\u2019 (dir. Eric Seymour), which\ntook us to Jackson Hole Bike Park in Wyoming, to see the positive impact that\nadaptive changes to their \u2018Deepest Darkest Trail\u2019 have had on the local biking\ncommunity. One speaker in the film was Pierre Berman, who fell while on a bike\ntrail a few years ago and received a full spinal cord injury as a result. The\nnew universal trail design (as well as some incredibly impressive bike\nadaptations that the film proudly showed off) has allowed for adaptive riders\nlike Pierre to experience the same thrills as before his accident.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u2018Enchainment\u2019 (dir. Nick Kowalski) followed\nAlastair McDowell & Hamish Fleming\u2019s quest to \u2018enchain\u2019 New Zealand\u2019s 24\nhighest >3000m mountains in 31 continuous days. Thirty minutes long, this\nfilm was significantly longer than the first two, but it was easy to get\nhooked. The dramatic backdrops certainly played a part in that, with wide shots\nthat framed the climbers against the sunlit, snowy mountain faces they were\nascending, but the enthusiasm of the two athletes also helped in making the\nfilm memorable. What could have been a boring, repetitive film was made\nenjoyable by the honesty and humour of McDowell and Fleming, who provided\nvoice-overs reflecting on their memories of the experience.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

In my opinion, the most powerful film of the\nevening was \u2018Free to Run\u2019 (dir. Dream Lens Media), which followed runner and\nhuman rights lawyer Stephanie Case, back and forth over the course of a single\nmonth in 2021, which changed her life forever. The film began in September\n2021, with Stephanie preparing to run the gruelling TOR450 race, one of only a\nfew international athletes who had proven themselves strong and capable enough\nto do so. Just a month before, though, Stephanie was running in Afghanistan,\nadvocating for local women\u2019s rights amid the infamous August 2021 Taliban\nmilitary offensive with the \u2018Free to Run\u2019 organisation. The film provided a\ndeep insight into the things many of us often take for granted, such as the\nfreedom to run and enjoy the outdoors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Also featured were a handful of short films from\nvarious sources, covering a range of topics. \u2018The Water Holds Me \/ The Water\nBinds Us\u2019 (dir. Lily Mae Kroese) was a watercolour stop-motion animation\nreflecting the joy of wild water swimming, and \u2018The Farm Under the City\u2019 (dir.\nBrett Chapman, Jordan Carroll) investigated Luke Ellis\u2019s vertical bioponic\nmicro-herb farm under the streets of Sheffield. \u2018The 86-Year-Old Marathon\nRunner\u2019 (dir. Sara Joe Wolansky) followed Ginette Bedard in her seventeenth New\nYork City marathon, and was an inspirational celebration of later life, and a\nchallenge to always push the perceived limits of the human body.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The highlight of the evening was getting the\nopportunity to hear from a live speaker prior to the interval. Kendal Mountain\nTour have a constant rotation of guest speakers following the event around the\ncountry, so every location has the opportunity to hear from a different speaker\nwith different experiences. The Aberystwyth speaker was endurance athlete Jamie\nRamsay, who spoke to the audience about his experience getting into endurance\nsport at a late stage as a result of dissatisfaction in his desk job, and all\nthe \u201cman-powered\u201d adventuring he has done since\u2014from his 28-day \u2018Atlantic to\nAndes\u2019 cycle tour, to his 17,000km run through the Americas. Complete with\nphotos and videos of just some of the incredible places Jamie has travelled\nthrough, it was truly remarkable to witness someone discussing their individual\nexperiences live, in contrast to the other films which were all projected onto\na screen. Jamie then took questions from the audience at the end and spoke\nindividually to multiple audience members in the interval.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The Kendal Mountain Tour is a national travelling\nevent, part of the world-famous Kendal Mountain Festival. The tour will\nconclude in Kendal on the 29<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> of June,\nand the Festival will take place from Thursday 16<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> to Sunday 19<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> November 2023.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
