<\/span><\/p> After\nan almost four-year losing streak, the Aberystwyth men\u2019s basketball team\nsecured their first win of the season against Cardiff Metropolitan 3\u2019s with a\nfinal score of 86-45. Kaydien Gunter, the team\u2019s president, said the win made\nhim feel \u201cOver the moon\u2026it set a good precedent for the season as a whole.\u201d\nAfter years of losing, setting this precedent for the team was really important\nto Kaydien and the rest of the team. Hamza Mhyn, the club\u2019s secretary, says that a lot of it has to do with\nthe attitude of the team, \u201cLast year, sometimes the attitude was we\u2019d go into a\ngame thinking we\u2019re gonna lose straight away\u2026This time we\u2019re going into games\nthinking we have to try our best because we want to win this.\u201d He emphasized\nhow much the losing streak had impacted the entire team. A lot of the players\ndescribed a \u2018losing culture\u2019 that seemed to overshadow the talent and drive\nthat the players all have individually. Winning their first game has turned the\nteam around as a whole, and has pushed them to change their attitudes toward games. This attitude change has been especially\nimperative for the freshers who had never experienced a game at a university\nlevel. Nikita Andreevski, a fresher on the team, said that \u201cTeam morale was\nhigh after the win, it was kind of unexpected because I heard that last season\nthey lost all of their games so I don\u2019t think anyone was expecting that big of\na win.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p> <\/span><\/p><\/span> <\/span><\/p> This\nwin has been incredibly exciting for the men\u2019s team, and has given confidence\nto the relatively new leadership. With a committee made up entirely of second\nyear students, and only a few committee members returning from previous years,\nthe men\u2019s team is fighting an uphill battle to get the club organized so they\ncan continue to play in the future. Alex Emus, the club\u2019s social secretary and\none of the returning committee members from last year, commented on the win and\nthe new leadership saying, \u201c It\u2019s really nice because we sort of developed this\ndemocracy\u2026which I think has really helped everybody in general. But from a\npersonal standpoint, it feels nice to be on a winning team again.\u201d Hamza agreed\nwith Alex on this aspect of new leadership. He said, \u201cI feel like we\u2019re more\nrelatable this year. Like being second year students we\u2019re new to this as well\nso we\u2019re not here to tell everyone what to do. We\u2019re taking other people\u2019s\nideas because the way we see it, we\u2019re all here to work together and build\nsomething together.\u201d The committee for the current year all seem to share the\nsame idea, that the culture they create for the team will affect their success.\nComing from a multiple year losing streak and jumping right into a win seems to\nprove that for them. The committee is working to make sure the team is as well\nrounded and connected as possible, even allowing players to run training\nsessions and have their say in drills and games according to Kaydien.<\/span> <\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p> <\/span><\/p> For\nplayers new to the team, like Nikita, the democratic structure is something\nthey have found to work extremely well. Nikita spoke about his relationship\nwith committee members, \u201cThe leadership is good, they\u2019ve all taken me under\ntheir wing. They\u2019re all really friendly\u2026Everyone is just there to teach you\nbasketball.\u201d The new team has created an extremely welcoming and friendly\nenvironment for returning and new players alike, allowing for more growth as a\nteam this year and hopefully setting a precedent for cooperation and success\nwhen the club is passed down to the next group of leaders. Alex emphasized that\nthe current committee is trying to set the club up for success in the future,\nbut it has been no easy task, \u201cThere was a lot of stuff to sort out when we\ntook over the club\u2026slowly but surely we\u2019re building the club back up, and I\nthink by the time I leave, hopefully, it should be able to be taken over in\ngood hands\u2026\u201d From financial issues to lack of coaching staff, the team has had\nto work extremely hard to get to where they are now, and they feel they have\nsomething to prove. Nikita spoke about people\u2019s perception of the team, \u201cWe\u2019re\nbetter than people think\u2026our record doesn\u2019t show it but I think we have some\ngood players, some good talent on the team.\u201d Old and new players alike shared\nthis sentiment, their record from previous years does not reflect the talent or\ndrive of the players, but is a result of losing culture and poor leadership.\nWith one win under their belt and fresh leadership, the team is in a really\nstrong position compared to where they were last year according to Alex.<\/span> <\/span><\/p> <\/span><\/p> Looking\nto next year, the team and the players individually want to continue to improve\nand have high hopes for the future of the club. Both Hamza and Kaydien\nexpressed their excitement for the Varsity game in March and have a positive\nattitude about the rest of the year in general. They want to continue to build\nupon the foundation they have created the first half of the season and maintain\ntheir new positive attitude toward games. \u201cWe want to do Aber proud\u2026\u201d says\nKaydien, and a lot of the team shares this motivation.
