Gyda dim ond rhai oriau ar ôl yn etholiad Undeb Myfyrwyr Aberystwyth 2023 rydym yn troi ein golygon at ddau safle arall yn yr UM sef Llywydd UMCA (a Swyddog Diwylliant Cymreig) a Swyddog Materion Academaidd.
Mae Llywydd UMCA a Swyddog Diwylliant Cymreig yn swydd efallai nad ydych wedi clywed llawer amdano o’r blaen. Ond mae ei statws ar yr un lefel a Llywydd yr UM gan fod un o’r pump prif swyddogion cyflogedig yn yr Undeb. Mae hyn oherwydd pwrpas y swydd yw bod yn arweinydd ar gyfer yr Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Aberystwyth (sef UMCA). Mae UMCA yn hynod o bwysig gan ei fod yn lle i fyfyrwyr Cymraeg ei iaith a dysgwyr i gymdeithasu a chymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau, cystadlaethau a chael lot o hwyl.
Mae gan UMCA aelwyd sef Aelwyd Pantycelyn sy’n cystadlu ac yn perfformio ar draws Cymru yn flynyddol. Yn ogystal mae yna dimoedd chwaraeon Cymreig sy’n chwarae o dan y faner Geltaidd. Rôl y Swyddog yw amddiffyn ac ymgyrchu dros hawliau myfyrwyr Cymreig gan sicrhau bod eu buddiannau yn cael sylw ac yn cael eu hybu.
Dim ond un ymgeisydd daeth ymlaen ar gyfer y rôl yma sef Elain Gwynedd. Dyma’r eilwaith yn olynol mae ymgeisydd wedi sefyll yn ddiwrthwynebiad. Mae Elain ar hyn o bryd yn Is-lywydd UMCA ac atebodd ein cwestiynau arferol.

Brwdfrydig, angerddol a gweithgar.
Sut fyddech chi’n arweinydd da?
Y flwyddyn academaidd hon rwyf wedi bod yn ddigon ffodus i fod yn Llywydd Cymdeithas Chwaraeon Cymraeg, Y Geltaidd, ac felly credaf fod bod yn Swyddog Diwylliant Cymraeg a Llywydd UMCA yn gam naturiol ymlaen i mi. Rwyf wedi datblygu fy sgiliau arwain fel Llywydd y Geltaidd ac wedi trefnu llawer o ddigwyddiadau, megis taith i 180 o’r gymdeithas i Gaeredin ym mis Chwefror. Yn ogystal, mae gwaith tîm yn hynod o bwysig i mi ac fel un o’r pum swyddog yn yr UM, byddai’n gwneud yn siŵr y byddwn yn gweithio’n effeithlon fel tîm i warantu bod pawb yn teimlo bod croeso iddynt yma yn Aberystwyth.
Pam dylid pobl pleidleisio amdanoch chi?
Rwy’n hynod angerddol dros y Gymraeg, a fy mhrif amcan fel eich Swyddog Diwylliant Cymraeg a Llywydd UMCA yw sicrhau bod y Gymraeg yn hygyrch i bob un person yn Aberystwyth, boed yn iaith gyntaf, yn ail iaith neu’n ddysgwr. Rwyf hefyd yn gyffrous iawn i gynllunio holl ddigwyddiadau UMCA drwy gydol y flwyddyn a gwneud yn siŵr bod y flwyddyn academaidd nesaf hon yn un o’r goreuon. Diolch.

Symud ymlaen i’r Swyddog arall sy’n cael sylw yn yr erthygl yma sef Swyddog Materion Academaidd. Mae’r swyddog yma yn ‘llais myfyrwyr ar gyfer pob mater academaidd. Maen nhw’n sicrhau cynrychiolaeth myfyrwyr ar faterion sy’n perthyn i astudiaethau academaidd, gan gynnwys buddiannau myfyrwyr rhyngwladol ac ôl-radd; hefyd meysydd megis ehangu cyfranogiad, asesu ac adborth neu ddysgu ac addysgu. Maen nhw’n cysylltu’n rheolaidd â Chynrychiolwyr Academaidd a Chynrychiolwyr Athrofa’

Empathetig, approachable a chaotic.
Sut fyddech chi’n arweinydd da?
Yn gyntaf oll, yr wyf yn poeni am bobl; Rwy'n cydnabod y pwysigrwydd o wrando ar bob llais. Rwy'n chwaraewr tîm gwych, sydd ddim yn ofni tynnu llewys a helpu. Rwy'n bendant ac yn weithiwr caled iawn sy'n dda am amldasgio. Mae arweinydd yn rhywun sy'n gallu datrys problemau tra'n dal i fod yn agored i feirniadaeth a syniadau eraill, ac mae hynny'n werth anhygoel o bwysig i mi. Mae'n rhaid i arweinwyr wir gredu yn yr hyn maen nhw'n sefyll drosto, ac mae fy llwyfan yn seiliedig ar brofiadau go iawn y myfyrwyr rydw i wedi cwrdd â nhw trwy gydol fy amser yma.
Pam dylid pobl pleidleisio amdanoch chi?
Rydw i wedi bod yn astudio yn Aberystwyth ers bron i bedair blynedd ac rydw i'n gyfarwydd â'r brifysgol nid yn unig yn ddaearyddol, ond fel cymuned fywiog o fyfyrwyr sy'n poeni am ble maen nhw'n astudio mewn ffordd nad ydych chi'n cael mewn llawer o brifysgolion. Os caf fy ethol, byddaf yn gwneud fy ngorau glas i wneud newid gwirioneddol i fyfyrwyr o fewn y brifysgol. Mae fy holl bolisïau yn bethau yr wyf yn wirioneddol yn credu y byddent wedi gwella fy amser fel myfyriwr.

Angerddol, cynhwysol a chefnogol!
Sut fyddech chi’n arweinydd da?
Rwy'n credu y dylai pob arweinydd da ddangos uniondeb, parodrwydd a pharch. Fel swyddog materion academaidd, dwi'n addo dangos hyn yn union! Rwy'n angerddol, yn llawn cymhelliant ac yn hynod o ddifrifol am y rôl hon, a fyddai’n dylanwad ar y tîm o'm cwmpas i adeiladu UM cryfach. Yn wir, rwyf eisoes wedi ymgymryd ag amrywiaeth o rolau yn y brifysgol, sy'n rhoi profiad a gwybodaeth fewnol wych i mi o'r hyn y mae myfyrwyr ei eisiau!
Pam dylid pobl pleidleisio amdanoch chi?
Mae bod yn swyddog yn rôl anodd i'w chyflawni. Rhaid i chi fod yn ffigwr cyson rhwng myfyrwyr a staff y brifysgol, a deall na fydd profiad y myfyriwr byth yn cyrraedd ei lawn botensial heb y cysylltiad hwnnw. Gyda fy mhrofiad, gwybodaeth ac angerdd, rwy'n addo bod y llais sydd ei angen ar BOB myfyriwr fel bod y brifysgol wirioneddol y gorau y gall fod!

With only a few hours left in the Aberystwyth Students' Union 2023 election we turn our sights to two other positions in the SU namely UMCA President (and Welsh Culture Officer) and Academic Affairs Officer.
The UMCA President and Welsh Officer is a role that you might have not heard of before. But their role are on the same level as the President of the SU and is one of the five main officers in the Union. This is because the officer is also the leader of the Aberystwyth Welsh Students' Union/ Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Aberystwyth (UMCA for short). UMCA is extremely important as it is a place for Welsh speaking students and learners to socialise and take part in activities, competitions and have lots of fun.
UMCA has an arts (singing mainly) group called Aelwyd Pantycelyn which competes and performs across Wales annually. In addition there are Welsh sports teams that play under the Geltaidd flag. The role of the Officer is to defend and campaign for the rights of Welsh students ensuring that their interests are addressed and promoted.
Only one candidate came forward for this role, Elain Gwynedd. This is the second time in a row that a candidate has stood unopposed. Elain is currently the Vice President of UMCA and answered our usual questions.

How would you describe yourself in three words?
Enthusiastic, passionate and active.
What would make you a good leader?
This academic year I have been fortunate enough to be the President of the Welsh Sports Society, Y Geltaidd, and therefore I believe that being the Welsh Culture Officer and UMCA President is a natural step forward for me. I have developed my leadership skills as the Geltaidd President and organised many events, such as a trip for 180 of the society to Edinburgh in February. In addition, teamwork is extremely important to me and as one of the five officers in the SU, I would make sure that we would work efficiently as a team to guarantee that everyone feels welcomed here in Aberystwyth.
Why should people vote for you?
I am extremely passionate about the Welsh language, and my main objective as your Welsh Culture Officer and UMCA President is to ensure that the Welsh language is accessible to every single person in Aberystwyth, whether they are first language, second language or a learner. I'm also very excited to plan all the UMCA events throughout the year and make sure that this next academic year is one of the best yet. Diolch.
Academic Affairs Officer
Moving on to the other Officer who is featured in this article which is the Academic Affairs Officer. This officer is the ‘students' voice for all things academic. They ensure representation of students on matters relating to academic affairs including the interests of international and postgraduate students as well as key topics such as widening participation, assessment and feedback or teaching and learning. They have regular contact with Academic and Faculty Officers.’
There are 2 candidates for the academic officer role namely Clare Foley and Anna Simpkins. Mouth of the Ystywth asked them our questions.
Clare Foley
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Empathetic, approachable and chaotic.
What would make you a good leader?
First of all, I care about people; I recognise the importance of listening to every voice. I'm a great team player, who isn't afraid to get stuck in. I'm decisive and I'm a really hard worker who's good at multitasking. A leader is someone who can solve problems while still being open to criticism and other ideas, and that's an incredibly important value to me. Leaders have to really believe in what they stand for, and my platform is based on real experiences of students I've met throughout my time here.
Why should people vote for you?
I've been studying in Aberystwyth for nearly four years and I'm familiar with the university not just geographically, but as a vibrant community of students who care about where they study in a way that you just don't get at many universities. If elected, I will do my absolute best to make real change for students within the university. All of my policies are things that I genuinely believe would have improved my time as a student.

How would you describe yourself in three words?
Passionate, inclusive and supportive!
What would make you a good leader?
I believe all good leaders should show integrity, willingness and respect. As the Academic Affairs Officer, I promise to show exactly this! I am passionate, motivated and extremely serious about this role, which will spill into the team around me to build a stronger SU. In fact, I have taken up a variety of roles already at the university, which gives me both experience and excellent insider knowledge into what students want!
Why should people vote for you?
Being an officer is a tough role to take on. You must be a consistent figure between students and the university staff, and understand that without that link, the student experience will never meet its full potential. With my experience, knowledge and passion, I promise to be the voice ALL students need so that the university is truly the best it can be!
