Voting in any election is crucial, but it’s especially important in elections that can affect you the most. The Students Union represents the views of the Students of Aberystwyth. They support students, run campaigns and voice the concerns of the students on a national level. You might think that there is no point in voting but in this article I will try to convince you that it is important.
The Students Union runs an online ballot every year to decide who will be running the SU for the next year. We get to elect students that will be taking up paid student officers and also volunteer roles. Voting opens 10am Monday 13th March and closes 3pm Friday 17th March.
Using the Myths section on the SU election page on their website, here are some points that I’ve heard many times:
- "My vote won’t make any difference so there’s no point in voting."
Actually there are elections every year in Students’ Unions that are decided by 1 or 2 votes! Someone had that critical vote that made all the difference – plus every vote counts!
- "The person I want to vote for will never get elected anyway."
Every candidate has a chance of winning and if everyone who felt like this voted, it might make a huge difference to results. Our elections also use a transferable vote, so if your favourite candidate doesn’t get elected, your next choice of vote will still make a difference.
- "I don’t like any of the candidates, so there’s no point in voting."
You can choose to vote for re-open nominations (RON) or you can abstain on your voting page. If RON wins the election (and this has happened in a couple of elections in SUs around the country) then none of the candidates will win, and nominations will open up again for new people to stand for that role.
- "I don’t know enough about the candidates to make a choice."
This is where the Mouth of Ystwyth comes in. With so many candidates to choose from, it might be hard to know. We will have articles coming out throughout election week with candidates answering our questions. A great resource to get all the information in one place in every position. Most candidates also have Instagram pages about their campaigns, or you could stop a candidate and ask them why you should vote for them. Anyone elected will also be accountable to students.
- "I don’t know how to vote."
Any registered student can vote using ApAber on their phone or on their desktop/tablet. You should also have been emailed a direct link to your voting paper from the SU. The voting paper itself has a list of roles that you can vote for. Once you click on a role, you will see a list of candidates with their photos and their biography (these are randomised for fairness). All you need to do is choose 1 for your favourite option, 2 for your second and so on, until you have ranked all candidates or chosen to stop. Then click to vote – it's really that simple.
You can make a difference and change the SU with your vote. The SU needs to be representative of the views of the students. Without your vote it is missing your voice at this election. Make sure you vote by 3pm Friday to have your voice heard.
Pam ddylech chi bleidleisio yn etholiad UM?
Mae pleidleisio mewn unrhyw etholiad yn hollbwysig, ond mae’n arbennig o bwysig mewn etholiadau all effeithio fwyaf arnoch chi. Mae Undeb y Myfyrwyr yn cynrychioli barn Myfyrwyr Aberystwyth. Maent yn cefnogi myfyrwyr, yn rhedeg ymgyrchoedd ac yn lleisio pryderon y myfyrwyr ar lefel genedlaethol. Efallai eich bod yn meddwl nad oes diben pleidleisio ond yn yr erthygl hon byddaf yn ceisio eich argyhoeddi ei fod yn bwysig.
Mae Undeb y Myfyrwyr yn cynnal pleidlais ar-lein bob blwyddyn i benderfynu pwy fydd yn rhedeg UM am y flwyddyn nesaf. Rydyn ni'n cael ethol myfyrwyr a fydd yn cymryd y rolau swyddogion myfyrwyr cyflogedig a hefyd rolau gwirfoddol. Mae'r pleidleisio yn agor 10yb dydd Llun 13eg Mawrth ac yn cau am 3yp dydd Gwener 17eg Mawrth.
Gan ddefnyddio’r adran Mythau ar dudalen etholiad UM ar eu gwefan, dyma rai pwyntiau yr wyf wedi’u clywed droeon:
- "Ni fydd fy mhleidlais yn gwneud unrhyw wahaniaeth, felly does dim pwynt pleidleisio."
Yn wir, mae etholiadau bob blwyddyn mewn Undebau Myfyrwyr sy'n cael eu penderfynu gan 1 neu 2 bleidlais! Roedd rhywun yn gyfrifol am y bleidlais dyngedfennol honno a wnaeth yr holl wahaniaeth - hefyd y ffaith bod pob pleidlais yn cyfrif!
- "Ni fydd y person rwyf am bleidleisio drosto byth yn cael ei ethol beth bynnag."
Mae gan bob ymgeisydd gyfle o ennill, a phe bai pawb sy'n teimlo fel hyn yn pleidleisio, gallai wneud gwahaniaeth enfawr i'r canlyniadau. Mae ein hetholiadau hefyd yn defnyddio pleidlais drosglwyddadwy, felly os na fydd eich hoff ymgeisydd yn cael ei ethol, bydd eich dewis nesaf o bleidlais yn dal i wneud gwahaniaeth.
- "Dydw i ddim yn hoffi unrhyw un o'r ymgeiswyr, felly does dim pwynt pleidleisio."
Gallwch ddewis pleidleisio i ail-agor enwebiadau (AAE/RON) neu gallwch ymatal ar eich tudalen bleidleisio. Os bydd RON yn ennill yr etholiad (ac mae hyn wedi digwydd mewn ychydig o etholiadau mewn UMau ledled y wlad) yna ni fydd yr un o'r ymgeiswyr yn ennill, a bydd enwebiadau'n agor eto er mwyn i bobl newydd sefyll ar gyfer y rôl honno.
- "Dydw i ddim yn gwybod digon am yr ymgeiswyr i wneud dewis."
Dyma lle daw Mouth of the Ystwyth i mewn. Gyda chymaint o ymgeiswyr i ddewis ohonynt, efallai y byddai'n anodd gwybod i bwy i bledleisio. Bydd gennym erthyglau yn dod allan drwy gydol wythnos yr etholiad gydag ymgeiswyr yn ateb ein cwestiynau. Adnodd gwych i gael yr holl wybodaeth mewn un lle ym mhob rol. Mae gan y rhan fwyaf o ymgeiswyr hefyd dudalennau Instagram am eu hymgyrchoedd, neu gallech ofyn i ymgeisydd yn uniongyrchol pam y dylech bleidleisio drostynt. Bydd unrhyw un a etholir hefyd yn atebol i fyfyrwyr.
- "Dydw i ddim yn gwybod sut i bleidleisio."
Gall unrhyw fyfyriwr cofrestredig bleidleisio gan ddefnyddio ApAber ar eu ffôn neu ar eu gliniadur / tabled. Dylech hefyd fod wedi derbyn e-bost yn cynnwys dolen uniongyrchol i'ch papur pleidleisio gan y UM. Mae'r papur pleidleisio ei hun yn cynnwys rhestr o rolau y gallwch bleidleisio drostynt. Ar ôl i chi glicio ar rôl, fe welwch restr o ymgeiswyr ynghyd â lluniau a gwybodaeth etholiadol ar gyfer pob un (mae'r rhain ar hap er tegwch). Y cyfan sydd angen i chi ei wneud yw dewis 1 ar gyfer eich hoff opsiwn, 2 ar gyfer eich ail ddewis ac yn y blaen, hyd nes eich bod wedi rhestru pob ymgeisydd neu wedi dewis stopio. Yna cliciwch i bleidleisio - mae'r broses mor syml â hynny.
Gallwch wneud gwahaniaeth a newid yr UM gyda'ch pleidlais. Mae angen i UM fod yn gynrychioliadol o farn y myfyrwyr. Heb eich pleidlais mae'n colli'ch llais yn yr etholiad hwn. Gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod yn pleidleisio erbyn 3yp dydd Gwener er mwyn i'ch llais gael ei glywed.
